4th October 2010 – St Malo, Mont St Michael - France

Well the shower today was very lukewarm and it has rained all night so very damp underfoot. We decided to have breakfast in the camp restaurant today which was very nice but the cappuccino was absolutely terrible – it was black coffee with a huge amount of sweetened whipped cream on the top – it was part of the breakfast so glad I didn’t pay separately for it!!!!

We were lucky with the weather today as by the time we got to St Malo it had stopped raining. I really loved St Malo – lovely long beach – reminded me of Aussie and a fortified city, the usual cobbled streets and lovely shops.

We then headed to Mont St Michael – to park the camper there was 10 euros and there was no choice about it! It probably didn’t look as spectacular on a dull overcast day as it would in brilliant sunshine but the amount of people there was amazing for this time of the year and the sort of day. I heard an American lady say “imagine this place in July, August or September you wouldn’t be able to find space to walk” So we are glad we are here in October. We walked up through all the narrow cobbled alleys where all the shops are and up into the abbey. However we did not pay to go right through but instead came down the battlements on the other side.

Then a long drive to get as far on the road towards Paris as we could. Paris is nearly 5 hours from Mont St Michael. Unfortunately it started raining again as the towns we went through were really very very nice.

We almost had a repeat of last night. The camp we chose was only ¾ hr from Versailles – our first stop in the morning but very hard to find once it gets dark. When we got there the camp was closed (8pm) but we managed to rouse someone and she let us in. This camp is in the woods – very dark (I made Geoff come with me to find the toilet and bring his torch). It is also very very quiet so looking forward to a good sleep in tomorrow.

We are excited to be finally getting to Paris tomorrow.

a sheep crossed the road right in front of us!
