We headed off to Limoges this morning. Very affluent part of France – the towns/villages very nice. We passed fields and fields of Limousin cattle – I guess not surprising since we are in the Limousin region of France! Tom, our GPS took us down very very back roads and we can imagine Jan and Darryl visiting many of these farms on their trip?
We parked at the bottom of the Cathedrale Saint-Etienne, also by the Souterrain de la Regle or Jardin botanique as it is known. We walked up and it was funny that for ages we were the only people around the Cathedral and gardens. Beautifully manicured and laid out.
We then headed to the Office of Tourism to find out where the Limoges factory was. However it appears Limoges is not actually made here and she showed me on the map some retail/outlet shops for it. We wandered into town – it is hard to find the centre here as the town is very spread out. However very cool shops – lots and lots of porcelain – you can tell that this is what Limoges is all about. Also a lot of modern artifacts design type shops and we found a little shop that had little new innovation type products in it which was really different.
We then headed back to the camper via the Patisserie shop to get our bagUette and croissants for lunch. A lady parked next to us told us the Limoges factory was 1km down the other way so after lunch we set off for it. We found it – called Royal Limoges – however very very little of the traditional blue and gold Limoges.
So after searching out some of the other outlet shops around Limoges and striking blanks we headed back into town and I picked up a little piece at a shop – I was not certain if it was genuine Limoges even though stamped with it on the bottom!
Heading for Poitiers tonight and on the way found another outlet – this looked more like the real thing so another little piece was purchased. We are just lucky a shop before Limoges was closed because a coffee set could have been coming home with us – see photo below!!
Found a camperstop tonight (by accident really) although it is in my book. So a free night tonight and less than an hour out of Poitiers.
This might have come home with me had the shop been open!
Such a familiar sight coming into villages the steeple is often straight at the end of the road.
