29th September 2010 - Beaune, France

Beautiful autumn day in the French countryside and a fabulous little town called Beaune with a small gourmet food market on a Wednesday morning. Lovely drive through the Bourgogne wine valley - I just don't want this trip ever to end!

We got up early this morning to get to Beaune because we had read about the gourmet food market. We made two mistakes today that wont be repeated.

Because it was going to take two hours not using the toll roads and one hour on them we decided it would be about 10 euros and we would take the toll road. 100km later and a bill of 17.50 euros when it would have only been another hour of our time - which is fairly cheap at the moment. So no more toll roads no matter what!!

The second mistake was once again our coffee. We really like to sit at cafes and have a nice coffee and soak up the atmosphere of the places we are in and people watch (fascinating) but when you pay the equivalent of twelve nzd for a cr...p cup of coffee it hurts! So only Starbucks or McDonalds cafe are going to get us to buy a cup of coffee and really they are not great places to soak up any atmosphere - so perhaps we will have to drink wine instead!! Actually often a glass of wine is cheaper than a coffee here in France!

Anyway aside from that we had a great day. Beaune is a very photogenic little place - a walled city with fabulous shops. The French childrenswear shops are just so neat but so so expensive. They shut from 12.00 until about 3.00pm for their siesta so we walked back to the camper and had our lunch - we had lots of lovely bits and pieces from the gourmet food market (which actually wasn't worth rushing for!).

Then we had a lovely drive through the vineyards and then by canals. We are staying at a place called Vichy which the book said was within walking distance of a spa resort - but the people in the office don't speak good english and did not understand what I mean. Free Wifi here which is always great.

Lots of photos today of scenes from Beaune

Our parking spot in Beaune - only 500m from the centre.

This is a shoe shop - note the door in - very exclusive

Absolutely gorgeous toy shop

We wanted to bring this pedal car home however it was already sold and for 460 euros (about 900 nzd)! Just as well!

The French ladies like the Italians do know how to dress!

I do tend to walk into Geoff's pictures!

28th September 2010 - Mulhouse, France

Geoff went off to apparently the most equisite exhibition he has ever been to being the French National Motor Museum in Mulhouse. I had a catch up day - two loads of washing, blog updates, cleaning etc! As usual when we were ready to leave the office was closed (from 12 to 3pm). So we relaxed and then set off late afternoon and ended up at a camp in a place called Besancon which we had spotted from the side of the road.
