21st October 2010 – Windsor, Eton, Burford – England

Well I froze last night! I had four layers on (including my merino hoodie) and the cold seemed to come in everywhere. I think I know now why campers have big blockouts on their front windows because that part of the camper was like a freezer. We are missing your heater Karen! We decided not to buy one because we only had six nights left but if we see a shop today watch this space. Geoff’s method of heating is as follows:

Two rings of the gas cooker!

It appears our gas water heater that normally blows hot air is not working. Anyway when I finally braved to get out from the duvet and went to have a shower the ground was covered in crunchy frost.

Consequently we were late getting to Windsor castle. We needed to be there for 11am to see the changing of the guard which only happens every second day at the moment. We got there at 10 to 11 so Geoff dropped me off and he went off to park the camper. I saw them come up the street and turn into the castle then waited for Geoff. We got tickets and rushed in and saw the final 15mins of the ceremony so that was good.

Windsor castle was absolutely awesome, also St Georges Chapel. Filled with meaning because we know of the Kings and Queens buried/commemorated there including the Queen Mother. What I hadn’t appreciated was the town was flying with royal standards and I thought it was always like this but it appears there is a state visit from the Emir of Quatar next week and the castle will be closed to the public and that is why the town is so decorated.

The castle was awesome as you will see from the following photos

The dolls house was awesome!

This was the Queen's post box!

Love the autumn trees and colours!

We then wandered around the town – very lovely and also had nice lunch.

mmmmm

Off then to Eton. The college is not open to the public at present but it was good to see the odd boy in tails going to and from the school!!! Also the teachers looked impressive. The town was also cool to wander around.

Lovely shops - no souless malls in Eton!

We then headed to the Cotswolds for tonight and to a little town called Burford. I found a knitting shop – a little more wool for my collection! At a lovely camp tonight 5 stars again! It seems the cheap camps are now closed for the winter so these flash camps seem to be our only option.

Beautiful camp spot

Thankfully the water heater system is working at present and we are nice and cosy at the moment anyway. You can be sure I will be rugging up again for tonight. The day was lovely today but a very very icy wind that cuts straight through you. Once again I am wondering whatever it is like in mid-winter????

  2. Love the Ice Cream truck! There is a flat deck one in ChCh but the driver wears earmuffs when he is driving it!
